A Guide to Cabling and Bracing

What You Need to Know About the Benefits of Tree Cabling and Bracing.

Tree cabling and bracing trees support unions in weak limbs, branches and sections by attaching rigid cables and/or bolts between them. This helps strengthen tree structure and prevent the stem and main branches from breaking under strong winds, heavy snowfall, ice buildup, and other external forces that can cause damage to the tree’s structure.

The most common cabling systems involve steel cables tensioned between two points on the main stems or branches. Bracing involves installing metal rods/bolts into the tree through a weakened stem or limb that is cracked/split to provide greater structural stability against wind-induced movement. When installed correctly, cabling and bracing can help reduce stress on vulnerable parts of a tree while helping to protect people and property from tree failure. This type of intervention allows trees with weakened structure to remain standing longer in the landscape with less maintenance required over time – an important factor when dealing with large specimen trees that are especially valuable due to their maturity and aesthetic appeal.

An ISA Certified Arborist should be retained to brace or cable a tree because they have the expertise and knowledge to help support and protect your trees from damage. An ISA Certified Arborist understands how to identify weak points in trees, select appropriate hardware and materials, use proper installation techniques, and inspect trees regularly for signs of failure.

If you are concerned that your tree is vulnerable to storm damage and might require cabling or bracing, contact our office and one of our staff would be happy to assist you.  One of our ISA Certified Arborists can assess the condition of your tree and determine what kind of support it needs to remain healthy, safe, and structurally sound. Beautiful Trees ISA Certified Arborists can also recommend corrective structural pruning and other treatments that may help prevent future damage and add to the longevity of your valued mature trees.
